lyrics

Walking to the Gallows
The hangman gives a smile
Such beauty for a young boy
“Now come, Juvenile!”

Too soon my life is over
never will I waste the wine
Some call it misfortune
But it’s there by design

A knitting lady sings songs
Ditties about Strange fruit
Her husband was a sailor
Played jew’s harp and a flute

I admit I wasn’t legit
I stole what I couldn’t grow
I had to fight to get a life
And the ghetto was my foe

Call me a witness
tell them how it is
“Poor men catch a wild goose
a rich man says it’s his”

Walking to the gallows
A preacher he did swear
Love is not the answer
A broken boy will not repair

I’ve seen this scene repeated
When I was a growing child
Listened to the whiplash cracking
Of many a neck gone wild

“Is this wrong or is it right?”
Asks my judge from below
Animals in iron cages scream back
“You’re supposed to know!”

Informers watch spectators
searching for my friends
The hangman throws a lever
And that’s how my story ends

Walking to the Gallows
The hangman gives a smile
Such beauty for a young boy
“Now come, Juvenile!”
