about

When I first brought this song to a band rehearsal, Nige loved the vibe. I suspect that's why he programmed in a big guitar break in the middle! It quickly became a regular in our set list.
After one gig in Castleford a fan started talking to me about the track. He'd bought the 12" single and grown to love the song so much he'd developed a ritual with it: before he went out for the evening he would play the track on his stereo at full blast to get him in the mood for a good time. Anyway, one night as he was playing it his next door neighbour burst into his house armed with a baseball bat. He'd been driven mad by the repetition of the song and had come to the end of his tether. Our poor fan spent that particular evening in A&E. True story.

lyrics

Want to know what the hardest drug in the world is? I'll tell ya.
It's real life.
It's so hard some people take other substances as an antidote for it.
Real life kills the seekers of oblivion so if anyone ever offers you real life, just say no, tell them there's a better way - rock 'n roll!

They can't always handle the way life makes them lonely
They can't always handle the nights that never end, no,
They can't always handle the nights that never end

They don't always mean to say goodbye to their friends
They don't always mean to take their own lives, no
They don't always mean to take their own lives
Sometimes they just want to find a place to hide

Dive deep seekers, dive to where you're safe. Dive to where no one will find you - right to the very bottom. It's alright, everything's alright in the dark stillness of oblivion

They don't always mean to say goodbye to their friends
They don't always mean to take their own lives, no
They don't always mean to take their own lives
Sometimes they just want to find a place to hide
Sometimes they can't help but commit suicide
Poor bastards
