He came to my house
In his long black coat
Forbidden verses in his pocket
And on his lips, a stolen quote

“If you live in times of madness
When the truth is made to hide
Then lies will enslave your future
And charlatans will be your guide”

I showed him to my room
And he laid down on the bed
He made the sign of the cross
As his wounds slowly bled

“All is lost” he cried like a king
“The city burns for its crimes,
Death squads patrol the streets
their songs frighten me sometimes …”

I read the rebel writings of Thomas Paine again
I heard the barefoot saboteurs calling out my name
I saw the highborn eat, laugh and dance with no shame
I tell you now, four horsemen wait to ride out in the rain

You know the game is over
When the results come before the vote
“The Kalashnikov is now your master!”
said the man in the long black coat

Against the night I saw the lights
Orange and red in dancing flames
On the wind I heard the cries
In between the called-out names
